As part of celebrating a nationwide bike safety week, St. Matthias NS thought of a fun and safe location for our cyclists to enjoy a cycle with their friends. Heir Island was the chosen destination. First thing that morning the Junior & Senior infants had a lesson on the yard with Ruth from Cycle Sense. 2nd to 6th class had their bikes and brakes all checked thoroughly in the yard before we set sail from Cunnamore pier. The ferry ride was so exciting for the Infants. The bikes had to have their own private ferry ride so that was hilarious to see! The older children set off cycling the island with the teachers and Ruth from Cycle Sense. The Infants walked to the beach and had a picnic there while we waited for them to finish cycling. Then all the students were divided up into groups of 4 and we had a very creative sand castle competition. The judges were looking for creativity, good team work and of course perfectly executed sand castles! What fun we had! Heir Island is a special place and we had a fantastic experience.
