For World Book Day the children enjoyed dressing up and talking about their favourite books. The whole school embarked on a day trip to the Everyman theatre in Cork. We saw a production of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes complete with a live orchestra. We really enjoyed it, especially those who had not been to the theatre before.
In the Junior room we had great fun designing and building houses as part of our “Homes” Aistear theme during February. It was a very collaborative activity and of course full site safety requirements were observed, although we were not actually “on site”
We had a busy start to February in school. On February 5th the whole school travelled to Abbeystrewry NS to sing with Peter Stobart. Afterwards we went to the Uillinn arts Centre in Skibbereen to engage with a children’s art exhibition currently on display. Art in Action is an interactive multi media exhibition that invites children
Sadie Budd in 2nd class wrote an essay “The best Christmas ever” and her story was published in the Southern Star (Bantry magazine issue) along with those of other students – great examples of West Cork’s budding literary talent. Well done Sadie, we are so proud of you!
All the students played a role in baking, decorating and selling delicious shortbread biscuits at the Ballydehob craft and art fair 2019. Special thanks must go to our SNA Kate who helped make the dough with the students. The Junior room cut all the different festive biscuit shapes and the Senior room decorated them wonderfully.
The pupils of the Junior room were fortunate enough to visit Sharon’s studio in Ballydehob recently. She showed us around her light filled studio where we examined all her sea scapes and other pieces of really cool art. We all experimented with various objects casting shadows on her art work. We’ve had another busy week at St. Matthias. Our endeavour to be as sustainable as possible in this school year started this week with us making our own stock , brown bread and pumpkin soup. We used any left over vegetables from Food dudes to make stock for our soup. The seeds we scooped out
Following a week of discussing climate change and its frightening implications, our students took to the school yard on Friday to mark Climate change Day in their own way. All the students had the opportunity to look at and discuss their peer’s posters, drink some plant based smoothies and listen to the Senior students read
St. Matthias NS marked the new school term by visiting our local alpacas. There were 2 mothers and their young, which were born during the summer. They were very curious to see all the school children and nibbled food from the children’s hands. They were really cuddly and cute and the children loved seeing them
